Background of the Study
Women’s political empowerment is critical for achieving gender equity and effective governance. In Ondo West Local Government Area, various strategies have been implemented to enhance women's participation in political processes. Traditional barriers and socio-cultural norms have historically limited women's roles in politics, but recent initiatives have aimed to address these challenges (Adebisi, 2023). Studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 indicate that capacity-building programs, mentorship, and policy reforms play a significant role in promoting women’s political engagement (Olawale, 2024). However, persistent challenges such as gender biases and limited access to resources continue to hinder full empowerment (Ilesanmi, 2025). This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of current political empowerment strategies and to identify additional measures that can further enhance women's roles in governance. By analyzing both institutional frameworks and grassroots initiatives, the research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the factors that contribute to successful political empowerment for women. The findings will contribute to a better understanding of effective strategies and support the development of policies that encourage women's sustained political participation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous initiatives aimed at empowering women politically, significant barriers persist in Ondo West, limiting women's effective participation in governance (Adebisi, 2023). Socio-cultural norms, gender biases, and resource constraints continue to undermine the impact of empowerment strategies (Olawale, 2024). These challenges result in low representation and limited influence of women in political decision-making (Ilesanmi, 2025). This study aims to identify the shortcomings of current political empowerment initiatives and to explore additional strategies that can enhance women's political engagement, thereby strengthening democratic governance in the region.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate current women’s political empowerment strategies in Ondo West.
To identify challenges hindering effective political participation of women.
To recommend additional strategies to enhance women’s political empowerment.
Research Questions:
What are the current strategies for women’s political empowerment in Ondo West?
What challenges limit women’s political participation in the region?
What measures can improve the effectiveness of empowerment initiatives?
Research Hypotheses:
Existing empowerment strategies significantly influence women's political participation.
Socio-cultural barriers negatively affect the effectiveness of these strategies.
Enhanced resource allocation improves women’s political empowerment.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it assesses the effectiveness of women’s political empowerment strategies in Ondo West. The insights will guide policymakers and stakeholders in refining current initiatives and developing new strategies to increase women’s participation in governance. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to more inclusive and effective political processes in the region.
